3 Ways To Get Paid Doing Lead Generation For Your Handyman Business

Jassen: All sounds good, now when it comes to building your house list you have a big track record for going back at least a decade that I know of, of getting paid to do your lead generation rather than paying for your lead generation can you talk about that a little bit?

James: I will talk about it and it’s kind of an odd subject because a lot of people think of marketing as an expense-

Jassen: Right.

James: -and a lot of times for me the act of generating leads and building my internal list is a profit center for me because I am going to be testing and constantly revising and improving on the systems in order to generate new people that know, like and trust me that join our list, that request information and so one of the things that we do to build that list is we offset it by making income as quickly as possible from that list and so one of the quickest ways- I’ll talk about three ways – one of the quickest ways is that Google AdSense and that’s what I was talking about at the beginning is that I have seen significant amounts of money from Google AdSense for generating people to my website basically have AdSense on your website and then when people come there whether they request some information or not they have a chance to click on advertisers a lot of time they’re competing directly with me but I’m ok with that you need to make that decision in your business but I was willing to let my competitors advertise on my website and a certain percentage of people would click on my ads and because I was generating leads so cost effectively using a lot of the strategies I talked about earlier but basically you know content and very inexpensive ads online then they would come to my website and click on and ad that would make more than what it cost me to put the ad up in revenue and so my lead generation cost was positive to me it was not an expense it was a profit.

Jassen: Right.

James: So, that’s one way AdSense the other way is to sell information products as a lead generation tool so you could create an hour long video on how to go do your basement yourself right?

Jassen: Right.

James: You could go create an hour long video on how to remodel your kitchen; you can do an hour long video on how to prepare your rental properties and you can sell those as lead generation tools maybe you’re selling them for $20.00 or maybe you’re selling them for $97.00 or maybe you’re selling them for $197.00 but then when people order those they get put on your prospect list and now generating that lead in most cases it’s going to be breaking even or you are going to make a profit on it so that the act of going out there and finding people to add to your client list or your prospect list is a positive transaction for you as far as money you are making money doing it.

Jassen: Right and for people that don’t know what you’re talking about with regards to an information product you know for handymen you know go down to Loews or Home Depot or Barnes and Noble and check out the home improvement section and you know anytime you see a book or book with DVD or any kind of combo package like that that’s essentially an information product showing how to do a specific home improvement project like you know I was at Home Depot the other day and they had an entire section of books with videos they had one about plumbing, they had one about building your deck, they had one about insulating your home and doing weatherization improvements you know anything like that can be an information product that you can sell on your own website.

James: Yeah, and it doesn’t even have to be that complicated for those that are getting worried that you know I need to go do production quality video no you can do a special report that’s “fifteen ways to drastically improve the price you can sell your house for” and those could be the fifteen things that you’ve seen most houses need to be improved by going and looking and houses and doing this for a while and then you can help people with that and maybe sell that for a nominal fee maybe sell that for $10.00 and your just trying to cover the cost of your lead generation and people will be happy to pay $10.00 in order to save you know to make $10,000.00 on selling their house and then they may even hire you to do it because part of the report is going to be and I’ll do this for you, you don’t even need to do it and you know if you really want to get creative and you want to extend credit which I don’t necessarily recommend but you could even do it basically with you getting paid when the house is sold so if you have the cash flow to support it you can offer an irresistible offer to a home seller and say look I’ll go do these ten things for you and I’ll put a mechanics lean against your house for the difference and then when your house sells I’ll get paid for it and maybe you charge a premium for that maybe you’re at the very high end of the market for offering that service and people will be willing to do that.

Jassen: Yup, there’s another way to get paid and that’s through affiliate offers could you talk about that really quick?

James: Yeah absolutely you’re trying to move us along and I appreciate that.

Jassen: Yeah, I am trying.

James: Yeah, and so you can do AdSense, you can sell information products, the other thing is once you have that list on there you could make money through affiliate relationships or referring the people on your contact list to other people of value so you’ve got your really good friends with a couple of real estate agents and one of them comes to you and says – and I’m not even sure if this is legal, with what’s that law about paying commissions-

Jassen: Ahh, RESPA.

James: RESPA and you’ll want to check with your attorney and make sure that RESPA that this would not be a violation I have to think it through but maybe they say to you look for every person that you refer to me I’ll give you a $200.00 gift certificate or I’ll give you $500.00 cash if they actually sell their house with me and so maybe you say I work a lot with real estate agent Joey over here and he always treats his clients well and I’ve seen him sell houses faster than I ever thought they would ever sell and so if you are ever looking to hire a real estate agent I’d recommend Joey and just let him know that I referred you and he will give you a free comparable market analysis which they’d offer free most times anyway and that would just be a way for them to say that they referred them and then Joey will pay you a fee for doing that do you think violates RESPA? – You know we’re not attorneys by the way, but is that you’re feeling?

Jassen: I think that probably would but I do know that there are some ways that you can work it…

James: OK, so it’s not a real estate agent so you do it with…

Jassen: Yeah I would check with your attorney on that.

James: Do it with an accountant or do it with someone that doesn’t have the same laws real estate agents in particular have very particular laws about paying referral fees.

Jassen: Right.

James: So, realize that the idea is the same you can get affiliate commissions you can recommend products online, you can recommend other businesses locally and maybe you do a swap I think we’ll talk about that here a little bit later here or you can swap lists instead of doing a payment arrangement so maybe the agent sends out an email to their list or you send out an email to your list or maybe it’s a part of their newsletter or your newsletter and you agree to exchange advertising instead of exchanging money.
