Google Alerts for Handyman Businesses
Oh this is a really good one for handyman business owners. Let’s talk a little about Google Alerts. Do you ever wonder if you could find out if anyone starts talking about you on the web? Want to know if people can – if anyone’s mentioning your business good or bad, or mentioning your name good or bad, or maybe even mentioning your competitor’s name good or bad, without having to manually go in and search the search engine every single day? Well, that’s what Google Alerts will do.
What you can do, is you can log into Google Alerts, and you can set up searches, or phrases of searches, that you want Google to send you an email about any time that thing appears on the web new. So basically, you can go in there and put in your name in quotes, whatever your name happens to be. Like mine is James Orr, so I could put “James Orr” in quotes, and then every time somebody writes something about James Orr, and it shows up in Google search, Google sends me an email summarizing all the new pages with a direct link to that page and a little summary showing, highlighting what was actually said. And I can go and click on it, and find out exactly what was said, when it was said, what they’re talking about regarding anything I’m interested in, including my name, my business name, any competitors I’m looking at or concerned about, they’re saying things about.
I can also pick topics of interest to me. For instance, one of the topics I pick is real estate investing. So I’m a real estate investor, and I’m interested in any time someone talks about real estate investing online. So I could set up a Google Alert, any time something new about real estate investing comes up, I get a little summary page from Google. I can go click on it and it shows me all the newest stuff that was just added that day or that week, or whatever time period you set in Google for that. So, a really powerful tool for you to keep track of what people are saying about you, your name, your family, your business, your competitors. You can set up all those different alerts, and be notified by email, whenever you want. Of course you can turn it off if it becomes too much for you. There were some words that I was searching that was just becoming an extra email in the box. I wasn’t really that interested, so I ended up turning it off, and it’s easy to do, and it’s free.
Until my next post,
James
