Alright. Let’s talk about organic traffic to your website when trying to promote and market your handyman business. And by organic traffic, I mean traffic that comes to your website without you directly paying for it. So that would include search engines. When your website goes up online, and you’ve got good content that a search engine would think would be valuable to someone doing the search for key words that are related to what’s on your page, they will tend to list your site high, and people doing the search for that a key word will have a chance to click on your website.

Now, I’m not sure how much detail to go into this, because I deal with this quite a bit, but the basic idea is it’s a positive feedback loop. If you have good information on your website, and the search engine shows your website for that keyword or keywords that you have, and someone clicks on it, it’s like a vote of confidence for what that search engine is showing. And that, the next time that someone comes and searches for that same keyword or the similar keyword, and your website has a chance of coming up, since somebody voted before that your website was a good choice for those keywords, it is more likely to appear again. So the more people that search for it and end up clicking on your site, the more popular your site is, and the more likely it will remain there for those keywords searches. If someone searches for keywords in the search engine, your website shows up in a list of results, and someone does not click on it, or they click on it and they immediately click back to the search engine, which is bouncing back, which we’ll talk about here in a minute, then that means that the website is not a good fit for that particular keyword search, and that there is a better chance that the search engine will not show that particular page in the search engine for that word in the future. So you want to have a good quality contents on your website, in order to get the page showing up, and people clicking on it, and people visiting it, and liking what they see.

So there’s a couple of things to be concerned with the search engines. The first one is this concept of keywords. And keywords are words that people might type into a search engine, where you’d want to be found. So if you’re kind of wanting to have your own website found for kitchen remodeling, or you want have your website found for basement finishing, or whatever the keywords are – maybe it’s Denver basement finishing, or Denver kitchen remodeling or Miami, or whatever city that you’re in that you want someone to search for that, or maybe it’s Denver handyman or Miami handyman, you want to have content you’ve written that focuses on that keyword. Now there are people out there that will do questionable things, like just write Denver handyman 74 times on a page, thinking that that’s going to give them a boost in coming up on the search engine. Not true. Not only is it not true, but people coming to your website and seeing that are less likely to click on it. And they’re more likely to click back quickly and just say, “I’m not coming here, it looks like garbage. I’m not going to use that website anymore.” And then search engines will take that into account later on, so when they see all these people coming back, they’ll not want to be there.

So you want to be writing content that uses keywords that are important, that you want to be found for. And you want to be writing about things on your website that are important, that will have pages that could possibly get indexed in search engines. And then, there’s this whole concept of hiring an outside company to do search engine optimization for you. Yes, you can hire companies that go in and will do, most of them, above-board things; some of them gray, some of them not so above-board, to help you with your marketing of your website, to try get your website ranked high in search engines, and things of that nature. If you run a blog for any period of time, and it’s actually indexed in the search engines, they actually go out and search on the search engines to find your blog. Then they’ll contact you a lot of times with robots, or people in India or the Philippines or Singapore, and they’ll have them just basically spam you by saying, “Hey if you want to get your website listed in search engines, we offer that service, go to our website and check it out.” So you will get solicitations for doing that. Usually, oddly enough, if you’re doing well and getting listed in search engines, those are the people they tend to focus on, because that’s where they find them. They go and they go look at certain search engines to find them. So my opinion on search engines and having the traffic, is you want to generate good content that people will want to read, and then you continue to put out a good content. I’m going to talk about some strategies for that here very soon.

The other way to get organic traffic, besides search engines who are listing you in people’s search for different words, is when other sites link to you. Well, how do you get another site to link to you? The best way to do it is to write really good content, where somebody would be willing to say, “Oh, I read an article on Joe Handyman’s website about remodeling your kitchen – you should go read this.” And they link from their websites, or a discussion forum, or any type of online place where they can put a link. And then they link back from that site to your site. That is the best way to do it. Of course, if you have some other business associates, if you’re working with a local real estate agent, working with a local mortgage broker, or working with other real estate investors, or you’re active in your own groups, or associations is another good one. So if you join your local association or your national association, they may provide link from their website to your website. So those are some different ways to get links out there from other websites coming to you. And then when people are browsing their websites, a small percentage, usually a very small percentage of them may say, “Oh, I’m interested to see that handymen website for somebody in Miami, let me go click on his site.” And they would go click through to you, and then you would get a direct organic traffic from that, traffic that you didn’t directly pay for. So those are primarily the two ways to get organic traffic, search engines and links from other websites. And search engines are heavily relying on keywords, and the pages and content you write. And there are some strategies with search engines optimization.
