Types of Newspaper Marketing for Handyman Businesses

Alright let’s talk about some types of newspaper marketing that you can use in your handyman business. First I’m going to talk about classified ads. Usually pretty inexpensive to run, but they are expensive on a size basis. So they’re probably one of the most expensive types of marketing you can get, as far as the amount of space you get but overall they’re relatively cheap.

Display ads, those are the ads that have – you’re buying a certain measurement of space in the paper in order to have your ad appear there, and give you a little bit more room to work with. Again, these types of ads you want to have a unique selling proposition, be using the headline in a very specific offer and call to action, especially in display ads. Please don’t get drawn in to the fact that the newspaper is going to want you to do something with lot of white space, and something with pretty pictures, and all sorts of other stuff. If you want to test, go ahead and test that first as a primarily text-based ad that has headlines, and I’ll think you’ll find that the headline’s going to out-perform the graphical one by a significant margin. But go and test it yourself and find out.

Flyer inserts, you can use flyers to insert into newspaper, similar to when we talked about flyers before. Sticky notes are great. They can actually stick them right on the front of the newspaper as a separate ad, so that when the papers get delivered, they’re right on there for people and they really get noticed. So, a highly effective type of marketing. Not a lot of people know that it exist. But you can get sticky notes for your ads and it’s pretty cost effective. I was doing a sticky notes campaign, let’s see, must have been about five or six months ago, and really cheap. I got $1,400 or something like that to have the entire circulation for a sticky note on the front cover.

Press releases and articles about you and your business – you can do press releases to your newspaper, and try to encourage them to write articles about you and your business, to get free press and free publicity. You can include that in your newsletter, you can put that on your websites, you can include it in your credibility pack, you can use it over and over again once it’s done about you. Plus you get that initial boost of getting some advertising in the papers. So it’s worth pursuing, trying to make some contacts in doing that. It’s something I would definitely check out.
